This year was the 30th anniversary of the competition and we decided to celebrate the event by substantially increasing the prize fund through sponsorship to £1,000 with the overall winner getting £400.
It had quite a dramatic effect with a high entrance of outstanding musicians. We decided to let everyone who entered have the chance of performing by holding the Junior and Intermediate sections in the afternoon and the seniors in the evening.
It was almost a double for the Taylor siblings with Jasmine winning the Intermediates and her brother coming second in the Seniors.
Adjudication was given by our MD Graham Burrell and Carolyn Sumner, who is a past music teacher and trained accompanist, having done so for us on occasions.
The afternoon prizes where presented by Councillor Jill Makinson-Sanders:
Winner of the Arthur Gilbert Memorial Cup– Franchesca Heppenstall (Flute)
2nd – Nelson Baju (Voice)
3rd – Emelia Reetham (Piano)
Winner of the Henry Brown Memorial Cup – Jasmine Taylor (Violin)
2nd – Helena Kurczewska (Voice)
3rd – Neil Saha (Voice)
The evening prizes were presented by Councillor Adam Grist and Brian Wood, the originator of the competition in 1989.
Winner, and overall winner of the Brian Wood Trophy – Shivani Jansari (Violin)
2nd – James Taylor (Alto Sax)
3rd – Thomas Hart (Trumpet)
